A DWI can quietly close doors you don’t think about until you’re standing at a border or an airport. Two of the most common surprises: Canada can refuse to let you in over a single DWI, and your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck can be denied or taken away. If your life or work involves travel, fighting the charge with a Houston DWI lawyer matters more than you might think.
Canada Treats a DWI as “Serious Criminality”
Canada is now one of the strictest countries in the world about impaired-driving offenses. Under Canadian law, a DWI is treated as “serious criminality,” which can make an American criminally inadmissible, meaning you can be turned away at the border.
Canada also eliminated automatic “deemed rehabilitation” for impaired driving. It used to be that enough time would clear the way on its own; that’s no longer automatic. Today, an American with even a single, old DWI can be denied entry unless they’ve taken affirmative steps in advance, usually Criminal Rehabilitation or a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP). If you travel to Canada for work or family, this is a real and lasting consequence.
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck
- Global Entry. Customs and Border Protection can deny or revoke Global Entry over a criminal conviction. Under the trusted-traveler rules, an arrest or conviction, misdemeanor or felony, can make you ineligible, and a DWI frequently does. Many travelers only find out when their membership is revoked.
- TSA PreCheck. A DWI is not on TSA’s list of permanent disqualifiers, but TSA has discretion to deny PreCheck over a DWI or alcohol-related conviction. It’s not automatic, but it’s not guaranteed either.
The Takeaway
If your life involves international travel, especially to Canada, or you rely on trusted-traveler programs, a DWI conviction can disrupt it for years. That’s one more reason to fight the charge rather than accept a quick plea, and to understand these consequences before you resolve your case.
